The Vampire Facial Explained

If you’ve spent any time scrolling through skincare content online, you’ve probably seen the viral “vampire facial.” The images might look intense — faces covered in plasma, needles, and a hint of drama, but beneath the hype lies one of the most natural and scientifically backed skin treatments available today.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s really happening, why it works, and why I prefer to use PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) over traditional PRP in my microneedling treatments.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin’s surface. These tiny channels trigger your body’s natural wound-healing process, increasing collagen and elastin production while improving cell turnover.

Over time, this leads to:

  • Smoother, more even texture

  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles

  • Minimized acne scars and pigmentation

  • Firmer, more resilient skin

On its own, microneedling is a powerful collagen induction therapy. But when we combine it with PRF, we take your results to an entirely new level.

The Science Behind PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin)

PRF stands for platelet-rich fibrin, and it’s the next generation of platelet-based regenerative treatments.

Here’s how it works:

  1. A small amount of your blood is drawn.

  2. It’s spun in a centrifuge at a low speed, slower than what’s used for PRP (platelet-rich plasma).

  3. Because of that slower spin, we retain more of your body’s natural platelets, white blood cells, and stem cells — without any additives or anticoagulants.

  4. The result is a natural fibrin matrix that slowly releases growth factors over time.

That slow release is key. It means your skin continues to heal, rebuild, and regenerate for days and weeks after your treatment, not just immediately after.

Why It’s Called the “Vampire Facial”

The nickname came from the visible use of your own plasma during treatment. After microneedling, your plasma (PRF) is applied topically or injected into areas like the under eyes to deliver those powerful growth factors directly where your skin needs them most.

It might look a little wild in photos, but the science behind it is anything but. You’re using your own body’s healing biology to trigger natural regeneration — with no fillers, chemicals, or synthetic ingredients.

What to Expect After Treatment

You’ll likely experience some redness, light swelling, and mild sensitivity for the first 24–48 hours — similar to a sunburn. Most clients notice smoother, more radiant skin as early as one week after treatment, with collagen rebuilding that continues for several months.

For best results, I typically recommend a series of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart depending on your skin type and goals with many patients continuing with a maintenance session on a quarterly basis.
